Both Great and Little Mell Fells are unique among the fells of the Lake District by being composed of the Mell Fell Conglomerate of Devonian age. The type of rock means that the hills have weathered to a relatively smooth, conical shape with few outcrops, although on Great Mell Fell there are numerous boulders dotted across particularly the eastern slopes. Notwithstanding this, there is some lovely lightly wooded areas, open runnable terrain combined with enough topo features to keep the orienteering interesting.

The Long and Short courses will visit the best parts of the map, whilst the Easy course will take runners on a proper hill walk, close to the summit which has some of the best views in the Lakes.

Approximate 15 minutes walk to the Start from the parking, with the Finish being adjacent.
