High & Low Hows is a lovely bit of Lakeland deciduous forest along the River Derwent nestled below the imposing Castle Crag. A good network of paths combined with the rolling terrain make for generally good running.

The start and finish, which are close together, will be a short distance away across the river. If river levels are OK, this can be easily done by fording the river adjacent to the car park, but if the river is in flood, then it is a 1.5km flat walk around the road to the Start (allow 30 minutes).
